In this paper I delve specifically into Baudrillard's thought on simulation as a way of contributing to Noema's effort to encourage discussion of this vital subject today. Jean Baudrillard, The Vital Illusion. His best-known works in English are The Transparency of Evil (1993), Simulacra and Simulation (1994), The Gulf War Did Not Take Place (1995), and The Vital Illusion (2001). What is horrible is that the cosmic illusion goes unrecognised as such, that it is mistaken in specific, arbitrary, and selfish ways for being real and thus becomes an object of diurnal unending general horror (worry). French soldiers were taught to think of themselves as unconquerable because they possessed elan vital. Take the following passage from a series of lectures he gave, in California, in May of 1999 (collected in the book The Vital Illusion), in which he limns our era: Ecstasy of the social: the masses. The alterity that Baudrillard refers to here is that created, or maintained, by Illusion. A car fast in traffic, an athlete performing complex acrobatic feats, a pilot landing an aircraft or other high-speed uses of sight, the illusion may be of vital importance by causing them to misinterpret the objects they 'see'. The head as secreting place for the as yet undisclosed is demonstrated to full effect in Ridley Scott's Alien, with the decapitation of Ash. To explore it, I'm going to have to plunge into one of the Asatru's one of the most vital and solid of the new religious movements to come out of the pagan revival, and may just have a substantial future ahead of it. J'ai remarqué que cette conférence est largement basée sur le livre “The Vital Illusion” de Jean Baudrillard. Before and during World War I, the French military was gripped by an illusory vision of heroism. Mais aussi le texte du livre est parfois plus clair, quelques extraits du livre sont disponibles sur Google books. I'm currently showing with James Gallagher, Mario Zoots and Ashkan Hanarvar in the Vital Illusion show at the Vertigo Art Space in Denver Colorado, it's truly amazing. Why this should be so, why the illusion of invincibility is so central to the myth of progress and its believers, is an intricate question, far more complex than a single paragraph or a single post can cover.
